Understanding the time zones that stretch across the United States can be surprisingly useful—whether you’re scheduling a cross-country call, planning a road trip, or simply trying to keep track of the news from coast to coast. The U.S. is split into six primary time zones, each with its own quirks and notable states. This guide breaks down each zone, highlights key states and cities, and offers a few insider tips to help you navigate America’s clock.

1. Eastern Time Zone (ET)

The Eastern Time Zone covers 17 states, including major hubs like New York, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. It’s the time zone that dominates U.S. media, finance, and politics. The zone observes daylight saving time from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, shifting clocks forward by one hour. Notably, the western edge of the zone includes the Florida Panhandle and the eastern corner of Alabama, making the zone a little wider than the others.

2. Central Time Zone (CT)

Stretching from the Canadian border in North Dakota down to the Gulf of Mexico, Central Time covers 11 states. It’s the zone of bustling metropolises such as Chicago, Dallas, and Houston, as well as the agricultural heartland of the Midwest. Like Eastern Time, Central observes daylight saving. A unique feature is that the state of Kentucky is split, with the eastern part observing Central Time and the western part shifting to Eastern Time.

3. Mountain Time Zone (MT)

Mountain Time encompasses seven states, from Colorado to Arizona, with the notable exception that most of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) does not observe daylight saving time, remaining on Mountain Standard Time year-round. This makes scheduling across Arizona especially tricky during the months when neighboring states switch clocks. Denver and Salt Lake City are key cities that fall under MT.

4. Pacific Time Zone (PT)

The Pacific Time Zone includes California, Oregon, Washington, and part of Nevada. It’s the time zone for Silicon Valley, Seattle’s tech scene, and Los Angeles’s entertainment industry. PT also follows daylight saving conventions and is one hour behind Central Time, which often leads to the familiar “Pacific Daylight Time” and “Pacific Standard Time” distinctions in media coverage.

5. Alaska Time Zone (AKT)

Alaska is a vast state split between the Alaska Time Zone (AKT) and the Yukon–Alaska Time Zone (YST). Anchorage, the state’s largest city, is in AKT, while the far northwestern region, including cities like Juneau, observes YST. The entire state observes daylight saving, but the split means that a single state can be an hour apart depending on the location.

6. Hawaii–Aleutian Time Zone (HAT)

Hawaii’s unique geography means it has a single time zone—Hawaii–Aleutian Time (HAT)—and it does not observe daylight saving at all. This steady time zone is one of the few in the United States that remains constant year-round. Honolulu, the state capital, is the main city representing this zone.

7. The Florida Panhandle – A Borderline Zone

While the majority of Florida observes Eastern Time, the westernmost portion—the panhandle—falls under Central Time. Cities like Pensacola and the Gulf Shores are thus an hour behind the rest of the state, creating a subtle but important time distinction that affects everything from broadcasting schedules to school start times.

8. The Nevada Split – A Small but Significant Detail

Most of Nevada is in Pacific Time, but a small region in the east, including parts of the town of West Wendover, observes Mountain Time. This rare split can lead to confusion when traveling eastward across the state’s border with Utah, especially for events scheduled during daylight saving transitions.

9. Daylight Saving Time: The Biggest Variable

Across all zones, daylight saving time is a major factor. Starting on the second Sunday in March, clocks move forward one hour, and on the first Sunday in November, they shift back. States that do not observe daylight saving—like most of Arizona and all of Hawaii—remain on standard time. This can lead to time differences that aren’t immediately obvious, especially for travelers or businesses coordinating across state lines.
